Annual Report 2012    Allianz Group 117 Carbon Neutrality In addition to our carbon reduction target, we set ourselves the goal of becoming a carbon neutral business from 2012. However, instead of purely buying credits on the carbon market, we are investing directly in high-quality carbon projectsthatgeneratecreditswhichwecanthenusetoneu- tralizeourremainingcarbonfootprint.In2012,175,000credits, eachaccountingforonemetrictonofcarbonavoided,were retiredfromourownprojects.Ourremainingcarbonfootprint was neutralized by credits bought from the carbon market whichunderwentastringentsustainabilityscreeningtoen- sure they met the same high standards as our own projects.
